The Avent brand was established in 1984 by Edward Atkin. At that time the brand was conserned mainly with the developement and manufacture of baby bottles. Avent set design standards for baby bottles including the use of soft, safe, oderless and tasteless silicone teats for bottles, which appeared to be favoured by infants compared with the alternatives at the time.

The company has continued to innovate and add to its product line. In 2006, the Philips corporation aquired the Avent brand and now retails it under the joint name of Phillips Avent.
